The fifth annual U.S.–EU Transportation Research Symposium in May 2017, “Decarbonizing Transport for a Sustainable Future: Mitigating Impacts of the Changing Climate,” built on the concept of bilateral transportation research to mitigate the causes of climate change from the transportation sector. The findings of the symposium will be released at this workshop, and conversations and key elements will be highlighted.
Mitigating GHG emissions is essential to prevent catastrophic climate change. The recent Paris Agreement re-affirmed the long-standing view of nations, communities and scientists that it is critical to keep the increase well below 2˚C to preserve the socioeconomic conditions of current civilization. The current trajectory of global emissions will increase average global temperature beyond the 2˚C goal. Reductions in GHG of at least 80% to 90% by the United States and European Union by 2050 are necessary to constrain the increase in global average temperature to less than 2˚ C. Therefore, additional mitigation actions, defined as “human intervention to reduce the sources or enhance the sinks of greenhouse gases,” will be necessary.
Within this cross-sectoral objective, the fifth symposium discussed the importance of mitigating transportation’s large and growing share of anthropogenic GHG emissions as a critical contribution to moderating the dangerous impacts of climate change. The 50 invited experts of the symposium were asked to consider these issues within four conversation areas:
1. Megaregions: policy, research, practice
2. Decarbonizing Logistics and Long Distance Freight Movements
3. Influencing Policy Environment Factors on Climate Change Mitigation Strategies
4. Enabling System Changes to Mitigate GHG Emissions.
The findings of the symposium will be released at this workshop, and conversations and key elements will be highlighted.
