Economic, Social, and Environmental Sustainability in a Future of Transformative Transportation Technologies

Standing Committee on Transportation and Sustainability (ADD40)

How will transformative technologies affect the triple bottom line of people, planet, and prosperity? This is a question that begs holistic thought leadership from a cross section of the transportation research community. This session seeks to foster multidisciplinary collaboration in asking important questions in light of the fast-approaching shift to electrification, connectivity, and automation. Four distinguished panelists give short talks and then discuss and debate in an open format.

Questions that will be discussed in this session include:

  • What are the most recent technology developmets?
  • What are the jobs and economic impact of connected and automated vehicles? Are these impacts likely to be socially equitable?  How might we mitigate unintended consequences?
  • What public health impacts are likely to result from the safety, mobility, and environmental implications of transformative technologies, whether due to shifted emission patterns, new access to opportunities, or attractiveness of active forms of transportation? Are there any environmental justice concerns?

It is likely that these questions have been touched upon separately in respective committees, but it is critical that all aspects are brought together through the lens of the triple bottom line of sustainability, and that economic, social, and environmental gains do not compromise one another.
