September 2017 was the busiest month on record for hurricanes in the Atlantic. Damage from Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria will top $200 billion. We’ve stories before: Hurricane Katrina, Superstorm Sandy, Waldo Canyon and Black Forest wildfires, the 2014-2017 California drought, Missouri and Iowa floods, and much more. The challenge is preparing for severe weather events, responding to emergencies, and ensuring the resilience of the system. We plan, prepare, and respond in order to return to normal as quickly as possible after an emergency. What can we learn from this round of hurricanes? What are we doing to apply these lessons to increase the resilience of our transportation networks and systems?
