Although nuclear density gauge testing is the primary tool for quality management of earthwork, unbound aggregates, and asphalt, properly implemented intelligent compaction (IC) technology can cover 100% of compacted layers and can ensure uniformity of the compaction process. Presented in this workshop are the research and implementation efforts to address the practical, institutional, and technical gaps that prevent IC technology from being used for quality management.
