Roadway Design and Operation: Using Human Factors to Guide Data-Driven Decision Making

Sunday, January 07, 2018, 9:00 AM-12:00 PM, Convention Center
John Campbell, Battelle; John Milton, Washington State Department of Transportation, presiding
Sponsored by Standing Committee on User Information Systems; and Standing Committee on Highway Safety Performance

This workshop explains, with examples, how theHighway Safety Manual (HSM) and the Human Factors Guidelines for Road Systems can be used together to improve roadway safety solutions developed in safety analyses and diagnostic assessments, and provides in-depth discussion on the basic process and on a set of representative examples. Emphasis will be placed on identifying the design or traffic-control issues experienced by road users so that maximum safety benefits can be estimated with the HSM methodology.
