In this session, presenters working in academic, state and municipal departments of transportation will explore key principles of systems science and how these principles relate to Safe Systems approaches in transportation. Presenters will illustrate means of bridging the “research-practice chasm” through a consideration of the inter-related components of transportation systems and identification of opportunities to catalyze significant safety impacts. Together with the audience, presenters will explore how state and local departments of transportation can advance equity and coordinate their efforts with health, law enforcement, research, media, community, and political partners to improve safety for all road users.
