Many materials derived from industrial byproducts, recovered from previous uses, or reprocessed from waste streams are proposed, and not infrequently used, as alternatives to conventional, geologically sourced aggregate materials. In the interests of a level playing field it might be desirable to assess all types, conventional or unconventional, by the same suite of tests, but that might be excessive for well-known materials or insensitive to potential problems associated with some unconventional sources. To address this issue, the session brings together producers, researchers, and technical experts to unpick several of the key issues and to show how the range of materials may be characterized sensibly and effectively.
